Frequently Asked Questions

What age can my child start taking karate?

We welcome students starting at age 4. Many Chesterfield families find that kids thrive when they begin around age 5, especially after developing routine at schools like Kehrs Mill Elementary, Green Trails Elementary or Wild Horse Elementary. Starting early builds strong habits in focus, listening, and discipline that last both in and out of the dojo.

Will karate help with my child’s confidence / self-esteem?

Absolutely. Our students from Chesterfield develop confidence through belt progression and skill mastery, while learning to stay focused through structured classes and one-on-one instruction. Karate teaches kids how to stay calm, listen, and lead, at home, in school, and in life.

Can karate be used for self defense?

Yes, and more importantly, it teaches kids when to use it. Through Shotokan Karate, our Chesterfield students learn both practical defense skills and the judgment to avoid unnecessary conflict. Martial arts empowers kids with confidence and control, not aggression.

Am I too old or out of shape to do karate?

Not at all. Karate is about showing up, not showing off. We train adults of all backgrounds, including parents and older teens from the Rockwood and Parkway districts who simply want to get stronger, sharper, and more disciplined.

Will karate make my child more aggressive?

Quite the opposite. Many Chesterfield parents tell us their child becomes calmer and more focused after just a few weeks. Karate teaches kids how to manage their energy, build self-respect, and treat others with kindness, all while learning real-life skills.

Will my child get hurt doing karate?

Safety is a top priority. All of our classes are structured and supervised, and every technique is taught with control and precision. Our Chesterfield students train in a safe, respectful environment, and statistically, karate has a lower injury rate than sports like football or even basketball.
